The underlying philosophy guiding our culture has been the same since day one. 219 Design was started by engineers, for engineers as a place where people could do the work they love with others who shared their passion for developing new-to-the-world products. We believe that we achieve a high rate of success on our projects because we cultivate an environment where engineers are inspired to learn, collaborate, and thrive.
The world of product development is constantly evolving with new technology and new approaches. As a result, we have built continuous learning into our culture and our routines. We learn so we can apply the latest and greatest knowledge to our projects. 219ers are innately curious and have an insatiable desire to grow as both engineers and people.
We learn from each other, from experts in our fields, and in formal classes. Our 23-person team spent 1588 hours (~40 weeks) on these types of learning activities last year.
As a consulting company, our engineers have the benefit of being able to work on (and learn from) dozens of different kinds of projects across multiple industries as well. We actively look for the type of projects and products our team is interested in.
Continuous learning and our iterative approach are applied to our management style as well. We consistently make improvements as we learn more about best practices and our employees’ needs.
Our collaborative culture is unique. 219 is truly a flat organization where you probably sit/stand at a desk next to one of the partners. We’re a team, not a hierarchy.
219 is interdisciplinary, which means we integrate knowledge and methods from different disciplines as opposed to working in silos. There’s no finger pointing. We help each other out with technical challenges and we have each other’s backs.
We treat 219 as though it belongs to everyone here. Financials and leadership decisions are transparent – almost all meetings are open to anyone who wants to participate.

More than half of our employees have been with us for more than five years – despite fierce competition from larger tech companies. When members of our team need even more flexibility, we offer part-time hourly status temporarily or permanently. Everyone has access to our machine shops and tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, mills and lathes, VR equipment, and electronics equipment for personal projects because makers don’t stop at work – it permeates our lives.
